Here are some guidelines to help you get a “quick estimate” on what size storage unit you might need.

5 x 10 This size is about the size of a large walk-in closet and can contain, for example, a couch and a chair, bedroom set, and small items and boxes.

10×10 This size is about the size of a small bedroom and will hold the furniture (excluding major appliances) from a one-bedroom apartment.

10×15 This size could hold the contents of a two-bedroom apartment, or a small car, if the unit has a garage door.

10×20 This size is about the size of a standard one-car garage. It’s big enough for furniture, appliances, and personal items from a two-bedroom house or a car or truck.

10×30 This size could hold the contents of a three-bedroom house or provide vehicle storage with plenty of storage space left over for the contents of one or two small bedrooms.

• Plan the arrangement of your space

• Use uniform sized boxes for easy stacking. Completely fill and tape shut- partially or overfilled boxes may collapse or tip. Label all sides of the box to make it easy to locate later.

• Place a small sachet or bag of cedar chips in with any clothing or linens to keep them smelling fresh.

• Store needed items in the front.

• Heavier boxes should be placed at the bottom. Limit the weight of each box to 30 pounds. Do not stack anything higher than shoulder height.

• Leave a small air space between your items stored and the walls

• Cover contents of entire unit with packing covers, sheets or blankets to prevent dust accumulation. Do not wrap furniture in plastic.

Self Storage Tips for the best Self Storage Experience

Appliances: A refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar. Some items can be stored inside large appliances. Cartons can be stacked on top of stoves, refrigerators and freezers. Make sure that stove and cooking equipment are cleaned before they are stored.

Bicycles and other metal items: To retard rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil.

Books and documents: Pack books flat to protect their spines. Do not place boxes directly on the floor. Use pallets or skids to prevent moisture. Use packing to fill out empty pockets in the cartons. Do not pack fragile items in the same carton with books. Do not overload.

Bedding, Clothing, Curtains, Drapes & Linen: Clothing, curtains and drapes should be stored on hangers. If hanging facilities are not available, such items should be carefully folded and stored in dresser drawers or cedar chests along with bedding and linen. Some facilities sell wardrobe style, cardboard cartons which help protect you clothes. Food crumbs or stains should be removed before storage. Avoid storing anything that will attract rodents.

Dishes and Glassware: Place a layer of packing inside the bottom and top of the cartons containing glassware. Label all cartons. All glass items should be individually wrapped. Nest cups and bowls and stand plates, saucers and platters on edge. Wrapped glasses should be placed toward the top of the carton.

Furniture: Place a pallet, cardboard mat or plastic sheet on the floor and stand sofas and mattresses on end. Disassemble beds and tables and wrap the legs in paper. If a table will not disassemble, place padding on the floor and place the table on its top with the legs pointing up. Use dresser tops for stacking cartons and dresser drawers for linens or small, delicate items. Keep upholstery off the floor. Most lightweight chairs should be stacked “seat to seat” or placed upside down on tables which cannot be disassembled. Place a light dust cover over your furniture.

Holiday Decorations: Save original cartons which contained delicate ornaments and pad the ornaments with packing paper or newsprint. Wrap strings of lights around a piece of cardboard before placing in a carton lined with packing paper.

Lamps: Wrap large lamp bases in padding. Wrap smaller lamps and place them in cartons. Pack delicate lamp shades separately. Do not use newsprint to wrap lamps shades or any other goods which may be damaged by ink stains. Do not store heavy items atop cartons containing lamps or lamp shades.

Mirrors, Windows and Screens: These items should be stored on edge not flat.

Records and Phonographs: Records should be stored on edge to prevent warping. When moving a record player, the tone arm and turntable should be secured to prevent bounding.

Tools: Metal tools should be cleaned and wiped with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil to retard rust. Long-handled tools such as rakes, shovels and hoes should be clean, lightly oiled and tied in bundles.

We highly recommend the use of a product such as damp rid and follow directions accordingly. Also highly recommended is to purchase insurance on your belongings in storage as we only have insurance to cover our buildings and we do not have insurance to protect unit contents.

Who needs temperature control?

Protect your items from mold & mildew by providing a protected environment that temperature control offers. As you might expect, we offer temperature control units at the Eastern Shore Mini Storage, in addition to our regular units. Whether it is the hottest days of the summer or the coldest in the winter, rest assured our facility will be maintained at a comfortable temperature. We offer this feature for more than just your comfort. It is extremely important that your personal belongings don’t become mildewed during the hottest and most humid days of the summer. There is no reason to settle for less. We offer self storage units that are heated and cooled, making them ideal for the protection of computer equipment, electronics, antiques and other fine furniture, medical or legal records, pictures, books and any other goods that might be harmed by extreme heat, cold or humidity. This added degree of protection can be life saver for customers storing large volumes of sensitive documents. Extreme temperatures and condensation can result in climatic calamities, thus the need for climate control storage. We would be happy to rent you one.

Most sensitive to extreme climate conditions are…

Antique and upholstered or leather furniture
Musical equipment, especially pianos
Crystal and fine china
Books
Electronic equipment and computers

Fine linens
Mattresses
Business records and files
Art work (especially oil paintings) photographs
Video tapes, records, CDs cassettes, computer disks, film If You Passed on Temperature Control, At Least Do This…Do not place valuable and climate sensitive items against the storage unit walls in non-climate controlled units. Condensation can form on the walls and damage your things.
Use products such as Damp Rid as directed. (Available in the Onancock office) So there you have it. If it’s valuable… if it’s likely to be subjected to extreme climate… and if it’s sensitive to climatic changes… temperature control will probably let you sleep better nights. Meanwhile there are many precautions you should take before even renting a unit, temperature control or not.
